The Importance of Our DNA
Our current DNA holds countless pieces of information about who we are as a species — there’s a reason they call it “the building blocks of life.” In fact, theorists believe that a large portion of our potential for happiness, our life satisfaction, and even our intelligence is determined by the blueprint that lies in our genetics. We Actively Use Less Than 2% of Our DNA
The Human Genome Project was an international scientific research study that aimed to understand and map out all the genes of humans. Essentially, this project sought to understand why our DNA works the way it does, and where its power lies.
From this important study came “The Book of Life,” which included the uncoded ancient script of human genomes, that included 3 billion “letters” or “base pairs”. This achievement represented a pinnacle to human self-knowledge and an enormous step in understanding who we are and why our species exists and evolves. It also gave us incredible insight into how we have grown and lived as a species and provides more insight on who we are and who we can grow to be.
After this study, it was discovered that we actively use less than 2% of our DNA. The other 98.5% is referred to as junk DNA, or “dark matter” DNA. So even though scientists could transcribe the book, they could only understand 2% of it. It’s as if someone picked up a famous novel and thought they could have complex arguments about it by only reading the back cover.
To this day, many scientists believe they have misinterpreted the true function of this dark matter DNA. Many theorize that it could hold the cure to diseases and life extension. While others theorize that it turns certain genes on and off in different types of cells.

Because so much of our DNA is a mystery or is misunderstood, most of it is considered extraneous by science.
